Pup 75th Anniversary : Celebrating 75 Years of the People’s United Party in Belize
PUP 75th Anniversary Exhibition San Ignacio House of Culture.
The San Ignacio House of Culture in Belize’s historic Cayo District has once again become the center of national reflection as community members, public officials, Ministers, and cultural leaders gathered for the opening of the “Continuing the Revolution: 75 Years of the People’s United Party” exhibition. This traveling installation, curated under the stewardship of Karla Pinelo, celebrates one of the most enduring and influential political movements in Belizean history.
For Belizeans and international visitors alike, the exhibit offers a rare opportunity to explore the roots of Belize’s modern democracy and the extraordinary journey of the People’s United Party (PUP)—a movement that shaped the country’s identity, sovereignty, and eventual independence.

PUP 75th Anniversary Exhibition San Ignacio House of Culture : A Legacy Rooted in Struggle and National Vision
Founded in 1950, the People’s United Party emerged from a wave of anti-colonial sentiment and economic hardship. A pivotal moment in its formation came when Belize’s dollar was devalued—an event that ignited national frustration and inspired George Cadle Price, later known as the Father of the Nation, to deliver his iconic speech at the Battlefield on January 6, 1950. His message urged peaceful resistance, unity, and resilience in the face of injustice.
This philosophy—progress through peaceful, constitutional means—became the cornerstone of the PUP’s identity. As the exhibition highlights, Belize’s independence movement was not fueled by violence, but by determination, strategic diplomacy, and unwavering belief in Belizean self-governance.
The Three Eras of Belize’s March to Nationhood
Don Hector Silva, revered historian and statesman, outlines Belize’s nation-building within three distinct eras—each closely linked to the PUP’s leadership:
1950–1975: The Era of Survival and Foundation
During this formative period, the PUP overcame intense colonial resistance. George Price and his colleagues were targeted, arrested, and pressured, yet persisted. Infrastructure such as rural roads, education access, and internal self-government were initiated, laying the groundwork for a national identity.
1975–2000: Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity
This era brought serious challenges, including escalating tensions over Guatemala’s claim to Belize. Guided by steadfast national defense and diplomatic persistence, Belizeans unified behind the principle that not “a square centimeter” of Belize would be surrendered.
2000–2025: Renewal, Governance, and Modernization
This period witnessed economic struggles, changes in political leadership, and renewed national planning. Under the present administration, the PUP continues forward with a focus on economic stabilization, social programs, territorial protection, and long-term national development.
A Tribute to Leaders Who Built a Nation : PUP 75th Anniversary
The exhibition highlights key PUP figures whose contributions shaped Belize’s political and social landscape:
George Cadle Price – Father of the Nation and architect of Belize’s independence
John Smith & Leigh Richardson – Founders and champions of the early anti-colonial movement
Nicholas Pollard Sr. – Union leader who aligned labor rights with national political reform
Right Hon. Said Musa – Former Prime Minister who guided economic expansion and social development
Hon. Francis Fonseca – Guided the party during pivotal years of reorganization
Hon. John Briceño – Current Prime Minister leading the country through global and national recovery
The Cayo District’s contributions are deeply honored, recognizing prominent representatives such as Hector Silva, Santiago Perdomo, Sam Waight, Assad Shoman, Dan Silva, and many others whose service helped expand roads, education, rural development, and social equity in Western Belize.
Preserving History for the Next 100 Years
Speakers emphasized that preserving Belize’s political and cultural history is vital for younger generations. As one presenter noted, “If we do not document this history, it disappears with us.” The exhibition is designed not only to honor the past but also to inspire future Belizeans with the values of:
Unity
Service to the People
Social Justice
National Sovereignty
Christian Democratic Principles
These values continue to guide modern governance and citizen engagement.
A Traveling Exhibit for the Entire Country
After presentations in Corozal, Orange Walk, and now San Ignacio, the exhibit will continue its national tour:
Benque Viejo del Carmen – Nov. 24
Dangriga – Following week
Punta Gorda – December
Grand Finale: January 15 in Belize City, celebrating the birthday of George Price
This multi-district approach ensures that all Belizeans can connect with the formative stories of their nation.
Belize’s Place in the World: A Moment of Pride
The exhibition also highlights Belize’s historic admission to the United Nations on September 21, 1981. Excerpts from George Price’s first address as a UN member reaffirmed Belize’s identity as a peaceful, progressive, multicultural Caribbean–Central American nation committed to global cooperation.
Conclusion: The Revolution Continues
The “Continuing the Revolution” exhibit stands as a powerful reminder that nation-building is not a moment—it is a continuum. Belize’s history, built on sacrifice, faith, diplomacy, and unity, continues to shape a brighter future.
This exhibition invites all Belizeans to honor the past, engage in the present, and participate in the ongoing story of a resilient and proud nation.
